Marriage and the Bible -- Part 17 -- Wives as Gifts

One thing that happens several times in the Old Testament account is on several occasions a man will give his daughter to a man in marriage for acts of valor or favors.
Do you get the feeling that this was about more than the surface? It was about making that man a part of his family. The obligations of this were BIG.

The only thing I wonder is how the girl would have felt about marrying someone simple because of obligation.

  1. Well possibly that was true in those times. But now she would marry because of love and because he is her best friend. Now her father can give her away knowing that she loves him and he will honor her.

  2. A question then:
So then are we to assume that fathers did not love their daughters as much in those times? Are we also to assume that the groom did not love his bride in those times?

By the way this is my old blog -- if oyu want the rest of this go to the Rabyd Theologian 2.0
